Software Engineer Atul Subhash Dies by Suicide, Sparks Nationwide Debate on Family Court Bias

Bengaluru, 9 December 2024 — Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, was found dead at his home in Bengaluru. In his 24-page suicide note and a video message, he held his estranged wife, her family, and India’s family court system responsible for his death.

Atul accused his wife Nikita Singhania and her family of extortion, claiming they demanded up to ₹3 crore (approx. US$350,000) as one-time alimony settlement.

He alleged that his wife was deliberately denying him access to his son unless financial demands were met.

In a heartbreaking portion of the note addressed to his son, Atul wrote:
“When I first saw you, I thought that I could give my life for you any day. But, sadly, I am giving my life because of you.”

Atul’s family claimed he was constantly mocked and pressured with threats that he should “die” if he could not fulfill their monetary demands.

His wife and her family went into hiding after the incident. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
